Mechanical vs. chemical repair of a defective cylinder-head gasket

The cylinder-head gasket is a central component of the combustion engine, located between the cylinder head and engine block, and seals the combustion chambers of the engine from the oil and cooling water circuit. Inline engines have one cylinder head gasket, V-engines usually have two. The "head gasket", as it is often called among car mechanics, is exposed to strong thermal and mechanical forces. As it has to permanently withstand the compression pressure from the engine's combustion chambers, it is subject to permanent stress. The service life of a cylinder-head gasket specified by engine manufacturers is 150,000 kilometers on average under normal driving conditions.

Is the Cylinder head gasket damaged, there is a risk of high costs. The conventional method of repairing a defective cylinder-head gasket is to replace it. This is usually a time-consuming process, as in some vehicles the engine has to be removed, dismantled into its individual parts and then reassembled. Depending on the vehicle, model and year of manufacture, this takes an average of 8-10 working hours in an automotive workshop specializing in engine repairs.

The cost of replacing a defective cylinder-head gasket is often out of all economic proportion to the residual value of the vehicle. Moreover, the installation and removal of a defective cylinder-head gasket is often not without risk. This is because combustion engines, especially cylinder heads, "warp" over time and with increasing mileage. This is due to the high thermal and mechanical stresses to which a combustion engine is exposed over the years. Replacing the cylinder head gasket alone is therefore often not enough. The cylinder head must be ground flat so that it is fully seated on the new cylinder-head gasket. As many workshops often do not have the facilities to properly surface grind a cylinder head, this step is outsourced to external specialists (engine reconditioners). Additional costs are incurred and the repair bill quickly exceeds the thousand euro mark.

Can a chemical repair of the cylinder-head gasket achieve the same result as a mechanical one?

Chemical repair of the head gasket

Yes, provided that the problem is on the cooling water side and is detected in good time (preferably as soon as the first signs of the problem appear). Symptoms of a defective cylinder head gasket) and tackled. Because as long as the engine still starts and runs for 60 minutes when stationary, a chemical repair is possible. And at a fraction of the effort and cost compared to a mechanical repair. In recent years, chemical repair by means of coolant-side filling solutions has proven its worth and has gained acceptance in specialist circles. These work on a thermal basis and use "bonding" (thermal hardening) to create a permanent seal on the coolant-side leaks of a combustion engine, including leaking cylinder head gaskets or hairline cracks on the cylinder head or engine block.
